Overcome Depression Naturally: Biological Cause

5-HTP is a naturally derived amino acid that has been shown in comprehensive studies to be safer than prescription drugs for the treatment of insomnia and depression, and can also be used for treating obesity, migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, and premenstrual syndrome. It may prove to be more popular than St. John’s wort for the treatment of depression and other serotonin-related conditions, as it’s been shown to produce results in as little as two weeks, while the herb may take a month or longer.

Author Michael Murray, N.D., a leading naturopath and coauthor of The Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, delves very deeply to explain the hows and whys of depression at the neurotransmitter level, and the illustrations of presynaptic membranes may be a bit much for the lay reader. There are also several sections with intimidating titles along the lines of “Enhancing 5-HTP with Catecholamine Precursors.” But the book’s comprehensiveness makes up for its occasional denseness. Murray includes enlightening sections on nutrition for peak serotonin synthesis, other complementary herbal supplements, and many online and physical sources for obtaining 5-HTP. –Erica Jorgensen –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal
Murray (Encyclopedia of Nutritional Supplements, Prima, 1996) believes that the symptoms of depression, obesity, headaches, insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity, premenstrual syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia can be alleviated by taking the amino acid 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan). The body converts 5-HTP into serotonin, a neurotransmitter vital for brain function, and Murray argues that increased serotonin levels mitigate much of the discomfort associated with the conditions cited above. He devotes major chapters to depression, weight loss, insomnia, and headache, with each following the same format: exploration of the condition and orthodox treatment, review of studies using 5-HTP, and recommendations for therapeutic doses. Personal stories illustrate how patients have benefited from 5-HTP. It is apparent from warnings given throughout the book, however, that use of this natural supplement is not without danger, especially if taken with certain prescription medicines. 3. And on a personal level, I know this is bunk. I am bi polar and I tried the “all natural” herbal route. I might as well been taking air pills, it did nothing. I was active, I had a regular sleep schedule, etc. and I was still bi polar. I’m not saying anti-depressants always work either (they didn’t for me, but I build a tolerance very quickly), but they do work for some people and I think its naive to just discount such effectiveness as “big pharma”

    1. Are you making the distinction between depression (which all people deal with from time to time) and clinical depression (bi polar disorder, postpartum depression, etc.)? There is a difference

    2. The still of the Virginia Tech shooting was in poor taste and just wrong. Its been proven that the shooter had NO DRUGS OF ANY KIND in his system at the time of the massacre.

    Not everyone who …
Not everyone who experiences depression have the same causes. For some, it’s physiological, others psychological, mental, spiritual. To reduce the cause of depression to a chemical imbalance is very simplistic. What causes the chemical imbalance? Many things, different things in different people.

    also, i would have …
also, i would have to disagree with the whole spirituality bit as would probably the entire atheist, agnostic and non-religious community. sure, if there are people struggling with their beliefs, that may cause depression symptoms simply because of the stress and worry they are putting themselves through. it is in no way the “lack of spirituality” that causes depression. people who waver with beliefs tend to have more depression, not the atheists with total lack of spirituality.

    some good points …
some good points here, and there’s no denying that proper diet and exercise do play a role in our brain function but this video should not be taken as anything definitive regarding the causes and solutions of depression. for example if someone had perfect diet, plenty of exercise, great environment, and fulfilling spiritual and social life and they STILL became depressed…what would be the cause? the fact is, there are people like that. no one knows, even scientists, the exact causes.

Yeah it’s worth it. It shouldn’t be to harmful even if it doesn’t work. In fact it is good for your body:) I’m not to sure serotonin is the ONLY reason people get depressed tho. Try to smile throughout the day, and laugh- even if it is forced, your brain will secrete beneficial products such as endorphins. Good luck!
